Simulation Concepts

This week I spent a lot of time researching more on how to procedurally make simulations. Our film is supposed to render real time. With this in mind I wanted to avoid using simulations are look at making things more procedural. The biggest development in this was my sand displacement. My very first semester one of my professors told me that the key to a good film and demo reel is interaction. I applied this concept when I made a geometry node system that mimics real life sand displacement while avoiding having to simulate every single grain of sand. The short of how it works is it takes proximity information from a target mesh and displaces a plane. This not only creates footsteps sinking into the sand but creates subtle displacement around the footsteps to add realism. This plane also has parameters that allows users to increase the radius of the displacement giving more freedom to emulate different materials people may be stepping into.
